What is Tolnaftate?
Tolnaftate is a topical antifungal medication used to treat superficial fungal infections of the skin. It is used for:
- Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis)
- Ringworm (tinea corporis)
- Jock itch (tinea cruris)• Fungal infections in skin folds
It works by stopping the growth of fungi, relieving symptoms such as itching, scaling, and redness
How do I take Tolnaftate?
Clean and dry the affected area before application. Apply a thin layer of the cream, powder, or spray to the skin and surrounding area. Use twice daily, in the morning and at night. Wash hands after applying. Continue using for at least 2 weeks (up to 4 weeks) even if symptoms improve early, to prevent recurrence.
What dosage do I take?
Dosage is based on frequency and duration:
- Apply twice daily (morning and night)
- Treatment duration: 2–4 weeks for athlete’s foot or ringworm– Up to 2 weeks after symptoms disappear to prevent return
- Not for use in eyes, mouth, or broken skin
What are the potential side effect?
Tolnaftate is generally well-tolerated.Common side effects include:
- Mild itching or irritation at the site
- Dryness or stinging
Rare and serious side effects include:
- Skin rash or blistering
- Allergic reaction (swelling, redness, difficulty breathing)
