What is Alendronate?
Alendronate (brand example: Fosamax) is a bisphosphonate medication used to:
- Treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men
- Increase bone mass in people with osteoporosis
- Reduce the risk of fractures in the spine, hip, and wrist
- Treat Paget’s disease of bone
It works by slowing down bone breakdown, helping to maintain or increase bone density.
How do I take Alendronate?
Take Alendronate first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food, drink, or other medications.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of plain water (not juice or milk)
- Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it
- Take at the same time each week (for weekly dosing)
- Do not chew or suck the tablet
What dosage do I take?
Typical dosage guidelines:
- Osteoporosis in adults: 70 mg once weekly or 10 mg once daily
- Paget’s disease: 40 mg once daily for 6 months
- Use exactly as prescribed by your doctor
- Not recommended for children or people with severe kidney problems unless advised
