Description
Clomid is an oral medication categorized as a Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator (SERM). It is primarily used for:
-
Ovulation Induction: For women who do not ovulate or who ovulate irregularly (e.g., those with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome—PCOS).
-
Ovulation Augmentation: To stimulate the release of multiple eggs to increase the chance of conception.
-
Male Infertility (Off-label): Occasionally used in men to increase testosterone and sperm production.
-
Timing: It is usually taken for 5 consecutive days, starting on Day 3, 4, or 5 of your menstrual cycle (Day 1 is the first day of your period).
-
Consistency: Take the tablet at the same time each day. Taking it at bedtime or with food can help reduce nausea.
-
Starting Dose: Typically 50 mg (one tablet) daily for 5 days.
-
Adjustment: If ovulation does not occur, your doctor may increase the dose to 100 mg or more in the next cycle.
-
Limit: It is generally not recommended to use Clomid for more than 6 cycles in total. If pregnancy has not occurred by then, alternative treatments (like IVF) are usually explored.
-
Because Clomid affects your hormone levels, it can cause several temporary side effects:
-
Hot flashes (similar to menopause).
-
Bloating and abdominal discomfort.
-
Mood swings or increased irritability.
-
Breast tenderness and headaches.
-
Multiple Births: There is a roughly 5–10% chance of conceiving twins (triplets are much rarer).
-
Vision Changes: Stop use and call your doctor immediately if you see spots, flashes, or experience blurred vision.
