Description
Lariam contains mefloquine hydrochloride, a long-acting anti-malarial used for both prevention and treatment of malaria. It is used to:
- Prevent malaria in travelers to high-risk areas
- Treat uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum
- Manage infections resistant to older anti-malarial drugs
It works by interfering with the parasite’s life cycle in the blood, effectively stopping the infection.
Take Lariam with food and a full glass of water to reduce the risk of stomach upset. For prevention, start the medicine 1–2 weeks before travel and continue weekly during and for 4 weeks after leaving the area. For treatment, follow your doctor’s instructions exactly usually taken as a single high dose or split dose over 2–3 days.
The correct dosage of Lariam depends on whether it is being used for prevention or treatment. General guidelines are:
- Prevention (Adults): 250 mg once weekly, starting 1–2 weeks before travel
- Treatment (Adults): Usually a total of 1,250 mg, either as a single dose or divided
- Children: Dose based on body weight and strictly by prescription
- Not recommended for use in individuals with a history of psychiatric illness or seizures
