Description
Amatem Softgel is an antimalarial combination containing artemether and lumefantrine. It is available in two strengths:
• Artemether 20 mg + Lumefantrine 120 mg
• Artemether 80 mg + Lumefantrine 480 mg
It is used to treat:
• Uncomplicated malaria
• Malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum
Swallow the softgel capsules whole with water. Take each dose with food or milk to enhance absorption. Follow the dosing schedule strictly and complete the full treatment course even if symptoms improve.
Dosage depends on body weight and the strength prescribed. General guidelines include:
Amatem 20/120:
• Used mainly for children, based on body weight
• Given twice daily for 3 days (total of 6 doses)
• Second dose taken 8 hours after the first, then every 12 hours
Amatem 80/480:
• Adults and children ≥35 kg: 1 capsule twice daily for 3 days
• Do not skip doses or stop treatment early
• Not for malaria prevention
Amatem Softgel is generally well tolerated.
Possible side effects include:
• Nausea or vomiting
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Loss of appetite
