Description
This ophthalmic solution contains a highly effective dual-agent formula designed to target the two most bothersome symptoms of eye allergies: itching and redness. It typically features 0.5 mg/mL of antazoline hydrochloride paired with 0.4 mg/mL of tetrahydrozoline hydrochloride. It is primarily used to:
Halt Eye Itching and Swelling: Antazoline acts as a selective antihistamine ($H_1$ receptor blocker). It actively blocks histamines—the chemical triggers released by mast cells during an allergic reaction—to quickly soothe itching, tearing, and puffy eyelids.
Rapidly Clear Eye Redness: Tetrahydrozoline acts as a vasoconstrictor. It stimulates local alpha-adrenergic receptors to narrow dilated conjunctival blood vessels, taking away the bloodshot appearance within minutes.
Preparation: Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before instilling eye drops.
Technique: Tilt your head slightly back, look upward, and gently pull down your lower eyelid with a clean finger to create a small pocket. Hold the bottle directly above your eye, squeeze exactly 1 to 2 drops into this pocket, and gently close your eyes.
Absorption Support: Press your finger gently against the inner corner of your closed eye (near the bridge of your nose) for 1 to 2 minutes. This keeps the medicine on the surface of your eye and prevents it from draining into your nose and throat.
The Contact Lens Rule: If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using these drops. The preservative in the solution can be absorbed by soft lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes after instillation before reinserting your lenses.
Prevent Contamination: Do not let the tip of the dropper touch your eye, eyelids, eyelashes, or fingers to keep the solution completely sterile.
To keep your eyes comfortable and healthy, follow these strict dosage limits:
Standard Routine (Adults and Adolescents): Place 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye(s) 2 to 3 times daily.
The Rebound Redness Warning: Do not use this medication continuously for more than 3 to 14 days (depending on your specific product’s label). Using topical decongestants like tetrahydrozoline for too long can cause the blood vessels to become dependent on the drug, causing them to swell wider and cause severe “rebound redness” when you stop.
While highly effective, this combination has specific clinical boundaries:
Immediate Sensations: You may experience a mild, temporary burning or stinging sensation right after putting the drops in, which usually fades within a minute.
Contraindications: Do not use these drops if you have narrow-angle glaucoma or a known allergy to either antazoline or tetrahydrozoline.
Medical Cautions: Speak with a healthcare provider before use if you have poorly controlled hypertension (high blood pressure), severe cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), as vasoconstrictors can occasionally cause minor systemic adjustments. Keep the bottle stored at room temperature and discard it 28 days after opening.
