Malaria is a serious infection caused by Plasmodium parasites, spread through mosquito bites. It affects red blood cells and is common in tropical regions. Children are especially vulnerable to complications if not treated early.
Malaria is caused by the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito, which transmits parasites into the bloodstream. Children can quickly develop symptoms after infection.
Risk factors include:
- Living in or visiting malaria-endemic areas
- Not using mosquito protection (nets, repellents)
- Weakened immunity or poor nutrition
Some of the associated symptoms include:
- High fever (often with chills and sweating)
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Tiredness or weakness
- Body aches
- Pale skin (from low red blood cell count)
- Irritability or drowsiness
Treatment is focused on clearing the parasites from the body and managing symptoms. Options may include:
