Malaria is a serious and sometimes life-threatening disease caused by parasites (Plasmodium species) that are transmitted to humans through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.
Malaria is caused by the Plasmodium parasite, with Plasmodium falciparum being the most dangerous strain. It enters the bloodstream after a mosquito bite and multiplies in the liver before attacking red blood cells.
Risk factors and triggers include:
- Mosquito bites, especially in malaria-endemic areas
- Poor use of mosquito preventive measures
- Lack of prompt treatment
Common symptoms include:
- High fever and chills
- Headache and muscle aches
- Nausea or vomiting
- Fatigue and weakness
• Sweating and body pains
Malaria treatment aims to kill the parasite in the blood and relieve symptoms. Treatment options include:
- Antimalarial medications: Artemisinin combination therapy are generally accepted as the most effective treatment for uncomplicated falciparium malaria e.g , Artemether/Lumefantrine combinations, Artesunate/Amodiaquine combinations, Diihydroartemisinin/Piperaquine Combination): These are effective in clearing the parasites.
- Supportive care: Includes fever reduction (Paracetamol), rehydration, and rest.
- Preventive care: Use of insecticide-treated nets, insect repellents, and prophylactic drugs in high-risk areas.
