What is Alendronate?

Alendronate (brand example: Fosamax) is a bisphosphonate medication used to:

  • Treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men
  • Increase bone mass in people with osteoporosis
  • Reduce the risk of fractures in the spine, hip, and wrist
  • Treat Paget’s disease of bone
    It works by slowing down bone breakdown, helping to maintain or increase bone density.
How do I take Alendronate?

Take Alendronate first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food, drink, or other medications.

  • Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of plain water (not juice or milk)
  • Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking it
  • Take at the same time each week (for weekly dosing)
  • Do not chew or suck the tablet
What dosage do I take?

Typical dosage guidelines:

  • Osteoporosis in adults: 70 mg once weekly or 10 mg once daily
  • Paget’s disease: 40 mg once daily for 6 months
  • Use exactly as prescribed by your doctor
  • Not recommended for children or people with severe kidney problems unless advised
What are the potential side effect?

Alendronate may cause digestive and bone-related side effects.Common side effects include:

  • Stomach upset or heartburn
  • Bloating or gas
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Muscle, joint, or bone pain

Rare and serious side effects include:

  • Esophagus irritation or ulcers (if not taken properly)
  • Jaw bone problems (osteonecrosis, especially after dental surgery)
  • Unusual thigh bone fractures
  • Low calcium levels
