Description
Chloramphenicol is a potent, broad-spectrum antibiotic formulated for ophthalmic use. It acts by penetrating bacterial cells and binding to their ribosomal subunits, blocking the synthesis of essential proteins required for the bacteria to grow and multiply. It is primarily used to:
Resolve Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Quickly clears up typical “pink eye” symptoms, including yellow-green crusting, gritty discomfort, and severe redness.
Treat Superficial Infections: Protects the cornea and surrounding tissues from escalating bacterial colonization.
Target a Wide Range of Microorganisms: Works effectively against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria on the surface of the eye.
Preparation: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and immediately after applying the drops.
Technique: Tilt your head back slightly and gently pull down your lower eyelid with a clean finger to form a small pocket (as shown in the diagram above). Hold the dropper tip close to the eye, squeeze exactly 1 drop into the pocket, and release the eyelid.
Absorption Support: Close your eye and press your finger gently against the inner corner of your closed eye (the tear duct area near your nose) for 1 to 2 minutes. This keeps the drop on the surface of the eye and stops it from draining away into your throat.
Keep It Sterile: Never let the tip of the dropper touch your eye, eyelashes, fingers, or any other surface.
The Contact Lens Rule: Do not wear any contact lenses during your entire treatment course. Wait at least 24 hours after finishing your final dose of chloramphenicol before reinserting your contact lenses.
Because eye infections can replicate quickly, treatment starts intensively:
Initial Routine: Instill 1 drop into the affected eye(s) every 1 to 2 hours during waking hours.
Symptom Improvement: As the swelling and redness subside, you can reduce the frequency of the drops.
The 48-Hour Safety Rule: Continue using the drops for a full 48 hours after your eyes look completely normal and symptom-free. Stopping too early allows lingering bacteria to survive, which can lead to a recurrent and potentially drug-resistant infection.
Chloramphenicol is highly effective but requires specific storage and safety awareness:
Immediate Sensations: You may experience a mild, temporary stinging or burning feeling, or briefly blurred vision right after putting the drops in.
The Cold Storage Rule: Before opening, chloramphenicol eye drops must be stored in a refrigerator (between 2°C and 8°C). Once opened, check your packaging; many brands can be kept at room temperature but must be discarded after 28 days.
Important Warning: Do not use this medication if you have a known history of blood disorders or bone marrow problems (such as aplastic anemia). If your symptoms show no improvement after 2 days, seek further medical guidance.
