Description
Coartem is a fixed-dose anti-malaria (artemisinin combination therapy), containing artemether and lumefantrine. It is used to treat:
- Uncomplicated malaria
- Malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum
- Drug-resistant malaria strains
It works by rapidly killing malaria parasites in the blood (artemether) and preventing further growth and recurrence (lumefantrine).
Take Coartem with food (preferably fatty food or milk) to enhance absorption. Swallow the tablets whole with a full glass of water. The treatment consists of 6 doses over 3 days. Complete the full course even if symptoms improve. Always follow your doctor’s instructions closely.
The correct dosage of Coartem depends on your weight, age, and medical advice. However, general guidelines are:
- Adults and children over 35 kg: 80/480mg tablet(s) initially, Another 80/480mg tablet(s) after 8 hours, then 80/480mg tablet(s) twice daily for the next two days
- Dosage is adjusted by weight for children under 35 kg
- Not recommended for self-medication or prevention of malaria without medical supervision
Coartem is generally well-tolerated.Common side effects include:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Loss of appetite
- Weakness or fatigue
- Nausea or abdominal discomfort
