What is Gaviscon?
Gaviscon is a foaming antacid containing Sodium Alginate, Calcium Carbonate, and Sodium Bicarbonate. It comes as chewable tablets and suspension for adults or as powder for babies and children under 2 years old.
It is used to relieve:
● Heartburn
● Acid reflux
● Indigestio
● Bloating
It works by forming a protective foam barrier that floats on the stomach contents, preventing acid from rising into the esophagus.
Shake the bottle well before each use. Measure the correct dose using a medicine cup or spoon. Take it after meals and at bedtime or as directed by your doctor. Avoid drinking water immediately after taking it to allow the barrier to form effectively.
The correct dosage of Gaviscon depends on your condition and your doctor’s advice. However, general guidelines are:
- Adults: 10–20 ml after meals and at bedtime
- Do not exceed 80 ml in 24 hours unless directed by a doctor
- Not recommended for long-term use without medical supervision
- Not recommended for Children under 12years
- Skin rash
- Swelling
- Difficulty breathing
