What is Ketoconazole?
Ketoconazole is a broad-spectrum anti-fungal medication used to treat skin infections caused by fungi and yeast. It is used for the following treatments:
- Ringworm (tinea)
- Athlete’s foot
- Jock itch
- Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis
- Fungal skin infections like candidiasis
How do I take Ketoconazole?
Clean and dry the affected area before applying. Apply a thin layer of the cream or gel to the skin and surrounding area. Gently rub in. Wash your hands after use unless treating the hands. For shampoo, lather and leave on the scalp for a few minutes before rinsing. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
What dosage do I take?
The dosage of Ketoconazole depends on the type and severity of the infection:
- Apply once or twice daily for 2 to 4 weeks
- For dandruff (shampoo): Use 2–3 times weekly for 2–4 weeks
- Continue using for a few days after symptoms clear to prevent recurrence
- Do not use longer than recommended unless advised by a doctor
What are the potential side effect?
Ketoconazole is generally well-tolerated.
Common side effects include:
- Itching or redness at the application site
- Burning or stinging sensation
- Dry or irritated skin
Rare and serious side effects include:
