Description
Oxymetazoline is a fast-acting topical decongestant medication that works by directly stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors in the smooth muscle walls of the nasal passages. This action causes the swollen blood vessels inside your nose to constrict (narrow), which rapidly decreases inflammation, shrinks congestion, and opens up restricted airways. It is primarily used to:
Relieve Severely Blocked Noses: Quickly reduces the internal swelling of nasal tissues so you can breathe easily through your nose.
Ease Intense Sinus Pressure: Promotes fluid drainage from the sinus cavities, relieving painful facial pressure and tension.

Technique: Keep the bottle completely upright and tilt your head slightly forward. Close one nostril by pressing it with your finger, insert the spray nozzle into the open nostril, and point the tip slightly outward toward your ear—rather than straight up or inward—to avoid irritating the nasal septum and preventing nosebleeds.
Application: Press the pump firmly down while breathing in slowly through your nose. Remove the nozzle, breathe out gently through your mouth, and repeat the exact process in your other nostril. Wash the tip after use and keep the cap tightly secured.

Oxymetazoline provides incredibly fast comfort, but it has a very strict safety boundary regarding how long it is used:
The Critical Rebound Congestion Rule: Do not use this nasal spray for more than 3 to 5 consecutive days. Exceeding this timeframe causes the blood vessels in your nose to become dependent on the medication. When it wears off, the tissues will swell significantly worse than before (a condition known as rhinitis medicamentosa or rebound congestion).
Local Irritations: Some individuals may experience temporary stinging, burning, increased sneezing, or dryness inside the nasal lining. Stop using if severe irritation occurs.
