What is Saltrol Inhaler?

Saltrol is a maintenance medication designed to be used regularly to keep airways open and reduce sensitivity. It contains two active ingredients:

  • Fluticasone Propionate (125mcg): A corticosteroid that reduces swelling, inflammation, and mucus production in the lungs.

  • Salmeterol (25mcg): A Long-Acting Beta-Agonist (LABA) that keeps the airway muscles relaxed for at least 12 hours. It is used to prevent symptoms like wheezing and shortness of breath in patients with Asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

How do I use the Saltrol Inhaler?

Since this is a pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI), technique is vital:

  1. Shake: Shake the inhaler well for 5 seconds.

  2. Breathe Out: Exhale fully away from the device.

  3. Inhale: Place the mouthpiece in your mouth, seal your lips, and begin to breathe in slowly. Press the canister once while continuing to inhale deeply.

  4. Hold: Hold your breath for 10 seconds to allow the medicine to reach deep into the lungs.

  5. Rinse: Crucial Step: Always rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after use. This helps prevent oral thrush (a fungal infection) and hoarseness.

What dosage do I take?
  • Standard Dose: Usually 2 puffs, twice daily (morning and evening).

  • Consistency: You must use it every single day, even if you feel perfectly fine. It takes several days or even weeks of regular use to reach its full protective effect.

  • Missed Dose: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but skip it if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose.

What are the potential side effect?

While highly effective, the combination of ingredients can cause:

  • Oral Thrush: White patches in the mouth (minimized by rinsing after use).

  • Hoarseness: A “croaky” voice or throat irritation.

  • Palpitations: A slightly increased heart rate or tremors (due to the Salmeterol).

  • Headache or muscle cramps.

  • Long-term steroid effects: Very rare at standard doses, but can include thinning skin or increased eye pressure.
