Description
Sumatriptan is the generic version of Imigran®. It’s a Triptan and a prescription drug. It is used to:
- Reverse the causes of migraines, rather than just the pain.
- Helps to alleviate other symptoms associated with migraines, including nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light or sound.
It works by narrowing widened blood vessels in the brain.
Take sumatriptan when painkillers like paracetamol, ibuprofen and diclofenac aren’t effective. It’s suitable for people who experience less than 10 migraine episodes each month. Sumatriptan should be taken to treat, not to prevent migraine.
Take one dose at the on-set of migraine. It can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, do not chew or crush. Only take a second dose if you felt the effects of the first, otherwise it won’t provide relief. A maximum of 2 doses can be taken over a 24-hour period.It’s a prescription drug and must be taken only on doctors prescription.
The correct dosage of Nurofen Tablet depends on your condition and medical advice. General guidelines are:
- Adults to take 50mg If you’ve never tried sumatriptan before, It is the recommended starting dose.
- Adults to take 100mg, a high-strength dose. Recommended if you tried sumatriptan 50mg without any side effects, but only got partial
- Not recommended for children
Like all medications, sumatriptan can cause side effects, which include nausea, vomiting, tiredness/drowsiness, and dizziness. These affect less than 1 in 10 people.Nurofen Tablet may cause some side effects.
