Description
Tobramycin is a powerful aminoglycoside antibiotic formulated specifically for the eyes. It works by binding directly to the protein-making machinery of susceptible bacteria, paralyzing their growth and causing them to clear out quickly. It is primarily used to:
Cure Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Quickly targets “pink eye” infections characterized by thick, yellow, or green discharge, swelling, and redness.
Treat External Eye Infections: Cleanses bacterial invaders from the surface of your cornea and surrounding conjunctiva.
Important Diagnostic Boundary: This medication is strictly designed to fight bacterial infections. It will not work against viral eye infections (like common viral pink eye), fungal issues, or simple seasonal eye allergies.
Preparation: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and clean water before handling the bottle.
Application Technique: Tilt your head back, look upward, and gently pull down your lower eyelid to form a small V-shaped pocket. Hold the dropper directly over your eye, squeeze the exact number of drops into the pocket, and close your eye gently. Press your finger lightly against the inner corner of your eye (near your nose) for one to two minutes to keep the liquid from draining into your throat.
Prevent Contamination: Do not let the tip of the dropper touch your eye, eyelashes, eyelids, or fingers. Doing so can introduce bacteria back into the bottle and reinfect your eye.
The Contact Lens Rule: Do not wear contact lenses while you have an active bacterial eye infection or while using this medication. The preservative in the drops can also stain soft lenses.
Your exact routine will depend entirely on the severity of your eye infection:
Standard Routine: Place 1 to 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every four hours.
Severe Infection Routine: For aggressive infections, your schedule may start with 2 drops every single hour until the swelling and discharge improve, at which point you will taper the dosage down.
The Complete Course Rule: Always complete the full multi-day treatment course exactly as prescribed, even if your eyes start looking clear and feeling perfect within 48 hours. Stopping too early allows the strongest bacteria to survive and return stronger, creating drug-resistant strains.
Tobramycin acts locally and safely on the eye’s surface, though some temporary adjustments are common:
A brief stinging or burning sensation immediately after application, mild redness, or itchy, swollen eyelids.
Storage: Keep the bottle tightly closed and store it at room temperature (15°C to 25°C) away from direct sunlight and damp environments. Discard any leftover solution after your treatment course is completed.
