Aneroid Sphygmomanometer

Description
What is aneroid sphygmomanometer?
A professional aneroid sphygmomanometer is a manual, dial-based device used by healthcare providers to accurately measure arterial blood pressure. Because “aneroid” means “without fluid,” these devices operate mechanically using gears and a diaphragm rather than hazardous mercury, making them a safe and highly portable clinical standard.
How It Works
Instead of relying on digital sensors, professionals use the auscultatory method to get readings. The instrument works in tandem with a stethoscope:
- Inflation: The user squeezes the rubber bulb to inflate the cuff, temporarily occluding blood flow in the brachial artery.
- Deflation: The air release valve is opened to slowly deflate the cuff (about 2–3 mmHg per second).
- Reading: Using a stethoscope placed over the artery, the listener hears the Korotkoff sounds. The first distinct tapping sound indicates the systolic pressure, and the point where the sounds disappear indicates the diastolic pressure.
